Democrats don’t want to pass a Supplemental Budget with Republican support

They must acknowledge there is a problem that got us here before we can begin to solve it.

Joint Statement from Maine House and Senate Republicans

This supplemental budget is critical to Maine’s future. However, Democrats failed to demonstrate even a basic level of fiscal responsibility. Democrats must acknowledge there is a problem that got us here before we can begin to solve it.  Simply put, they don’t want to pass a supplemental budget with Republican support.

Throughout the process, Republicans worked in good faith with Democrats to shape every aspect of this budget. However, Democratic legislative leadership blocked the inclusion of the Governor’s Part S proposal, which would limit General Assistance benefits to three months to save the state and municipalities millions of dollars. This provision is essential, saving $10 million in the Governor’s Biennial Budget alone and imposing necessary controls on escalating welfare spending.

Legislative Republicans remain committed to advancing common-sense solutions that address the state’s challenges while protecting Maine’s taxpayers.  Doing so will ensure immediate funding for Maine’s hospitals, nursing homes, and the critical spruce budworm spraying needed in Maine’s northern forests.
