Independence Day celebrates our independence from tyrannical rule

We have unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness  

I am Representative Randy Greenwood proudly representing Litchfield, Monmouth and my home town of Wales, with this week’s Republican Radio Address. 

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.”

These words from the Declaration of Independence are foundational to the Republic of the United States of America. They are part of our DNA that sets us apart from every other nation on this earth.

In 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence.

Two days later –on July 4-delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence.

Governments are formed by the people and for the people.

Proper governing requires consent from the governed.

This week we celebrate that our country is set up to correct injustices and restore consent from the governed when it strays from these founding principles.

All that is needed is an informed, engaged citizenry with the courage to peacefully and deliberately engage in returning our country to attaining peace, prosperity, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

There is work to be done in the coming months to resurrect Maine AND… restore America’s greatness.
