Rep. Boyer requested the Government Oversight Committee investigate the Office of Cannabis Policy last Friday
AUGUSTA, ME – State Representative David Boyer today expressed his gratitude towards the Government Oversight Committee for their decision to move forward with an investigation into potential conflicts of interest concerning John Hudak, Director of the Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP). On February 14, the members of the Government of Oversight Committee voted unanimously to investigate the appearance of conflict of interest regarding Director Hudak and the software company METRC.
Rep. Boyer, serving as the Ranking House Republican on the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee, has been a vocal advocate for transparency and integrity within Maine’s cannabis regulatory framework.
“The decision by the Government Oversight Committee is a crucial step toward restoring public confidence in our state’s cannabis regulatory framework. For too long, questions have been raised about the integrity of the processes at the Office of Cannabis Policy, particularly regarding Director Hudak’s past affiliations and potential conflicts involving state-mandated partnerships. I commend the committee for taking swift action to examine these concerns.
“It is imperative that all executive branch employees adhere to the highest ethical standards, and any appearance of bias or conflict undermines our trust in government. I appreciate the committee’s commitment to an impartial and thorough review, and I look forward to the findings which will guide necessary reforms.”
This investigation is of timely importance as the METRC contract expires next year and the state has already launched the RFP process. Additionally, the OCP is pushing to expand METRC to the medical program, which would provide very lucrative to their company. In addition to revenue from the contract with the state, cannabis cultivators must pay for each METRC plant tag and pay monthly subscription fees. One mid-size operator paid METRC $34,000 in fees last year.
