MaineCare Fraud Hurts Recipients and Taxpayers Alike

Rep. Nathan Wadsworth (R-Hiram)

Recent federal court filings have brought renewed attention to troubling allegations of fraud within MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program. According to public reporting, a Lewiston-based health care provider that was the largest MaineCare biller for interpreting services over the past decade has been linked to a federal criminal case alleging a scheme that used Medicaid funds to commit tax fraud.

Court documents allege that interpreter services were billed to MaineCare for work that never occurred, and that payments were reported for employees who did not exist. While the case is being prosecuted as tax fraud rather than health care fraud, the alleged conduct mirrors patterns that investigators flagged years ago and raises serious concerns about oversight and accountability within the system.

MaineCare exists to serve vulnerable residents who rely on it for essential health care. When fraud occurs, it diverts resources away from those who truly need help and places additional strain on already overburdened taxpayers. Every dollar lost to abuse is a dollar that cannot be used for patient care, provider support, or long-term program stability.

Maine is one of a limited number of states that directly reimburses interpreter services through Medicaid. That policy makes proper documentation and enforcement especially important. Public records indicate that concerns about interpreter billing practices were identified years ago, yet significant payments continued with limited enforcement action.

These developments reinforce the need for thorough, impartial review of MaineCare’s payment systems and vendor oversight. Lawmakers from both parties have recently called for increased scrutiny and formal investigations to ensure public funds are being spent lawfully and effectively.

Protecting MaineCare means protecting both the people who depend on it and the taxpayers who fund it. Transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship are not partisan goals—they are essential to maintaining trust in one of the state’s most important safety-net programs. Addressing fraud wherever it exists is necessary to preserve MaineCare for those who truly rely on it.
