Rep. Nathan Wadsworth (R-Hiram)
Growing evidence of fraud in Maine has drawn attention from the federal government. Maine has been included on a list of states that are being looked at. Significant action in the form of an Executive Order has been taken to address fraud, waste, and abuse in taxpayer-funded programs by establishing a new federal Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, chaired by the Vice President.
- Executive Order:

The Executive Order directs agencies to:
- Strengthen eligibility verification before payments are made
- Improve documentation and recordkeeping standards
- Enhance data sharing across agencies
- Develop anti-fraud action plans within 90 days
The White House also noted that in some states,
“insufficient safeguards and weak oversight increase the risk of large-scale fraud.”
This applies to Maine, because:
- A federal audit identified $45.6 million in improper MaineCare payments
- Every case reviewed contained errors, including missing documentation
- Spending increased significantly without corresponding oversight safeguards
In addition:
- The state has suspended payments to at least one provider amid fraud concerns
- Investigations have identified billing irregularities in other service areas
These findings point to gaps in oversight that now fall under increased federal scrutiny.
With this new task force in place, Maine can expect:
- Increased federal audits and oversight activity
- Stronger expectations around pre-payment verification
- Greater emphasis on preventing improper payments—not just correcting them later
- Potential pressure to recover misspent funds
The federal government is moving toward a clear standard:
Verify first. Pay second.
As Maine continues to administer federally funded programs, it will be important to ensure that our systems meet that standard—protecting both taxpayers and those who rely on these services.
I will continue to monitor federal developments and their impact on Maine, and I remain committed to ensuring accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
As always, if you have questions or concerns about this issue — or any matter involving state government — please do not hesitate to reach out. My office is here to help.
