This week, the federal government sent a clear message to Maine.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has denied the Mills Administration’s request for more time to turn over records related to MaineCare.
Washington’s response was direct:
The records are due. The audits continue. Accountability cannot wait.
This is no longer a political disagreement.
This is a federal program integrity investigation.
In their letter, Federal officials rejected the delay because they cited urgency — urgency to protect taxpayer dollars, urgency to prevent further delays in oversight, and serious concerns about program integrity.
In other words, the federal government believes the problems are significant and time-sensitive.
Why is Washington concerned?
A recent federal Office of Inspector General audit identified $45.6 million in improper payments tied to autism services. Every sampled case contained errors.
The findings included missing documentation and approvals, billing without proof that services were delivered, copy-and-paste “cloned” records, and even payments for non-therapy time.
And this is not an isolated issue.
There are now multiple federal reviews underway. There is congressional scrutiny of Maine’s Medicaid funding practices. High-risk service sectors have seen rapid cost growth.
The deeper concern is systemic — a “pay first, verify later” culture that is now creating federal liability for Maine.
The financial risk is real.
Maine already faces a $28.7 million federal repayment. Additional claims remain under review. Medicaid represents roughly a quarter to nearly a third of Maine’s state budget.
Further clawbacks could impact our state budget, taxpayers, and the services relied upon by those who truly need them.
Republicans will continue to call for accountability.
This is not about politics. It is about protecting vulnerable patients. Protecting taxpayers. Restoring confidence in MaineCare.
When federal officials warn that delays “send the wrong signal to taxpayers,” Maine should take that seriously.
The Mills Administration and legislative Democrats must fully comply with federal requests immediately. They must implement real-time oversight and meaningful post-payment audits. They must strengthen provider verification and documentation standards.
MaineCare must pay for services delivered — not promises made.
Mainers deserve transparency. They deserve accountability. And they deserve a program that works for patients — not one that can be gamed at taxpayer expense.
