Maine has the highest percentage of veterans per capita in the country
STATE HOUSE- A bill to provide property tax relief to veterans was heard by the Joint Standing Committee on Taxation today. Sponsored by Rep. Benjamin Hymes (R- Waldo), LD 1737, “An Act to Provide up to $5,000 in Property Tax Relief to Veterans” proposes toprovide up to $5,000 in property tax relief to veterans. It would apply to all veterans over 62, not just those who served in armed conflicts.
“Maine has the highest percentage of veterans per capita in the country, in part because we recognize and value their service and ongoing contributions to the fabric of our communities,” said Rep. Hymes. “My bill is designed to provide some property tax relief to lessen the burden of our oppressive state tax structure. This bill is one piece of an overall effort to lower taxes on all Mainers.”
Rep. Hymes retired last summer after 20 years on active duty, giving him a unique understanding of what is working and what is not. He crafted this bill after consulting with veterans around the state.
