I do not rely on hyperbole or fear-mongering when communicating on important topics of concern to those I serve. I do, however, believe in calling it like I see it, and because of this I will say that Maine is not on a good path in terms of our economic future. So long as a single-party supermajority rules Augusta, things are not likely to get better any time soon.
I am also a realist and I understand, like most everyone does, if we truly want a stronger and more prosperous economic future for all Mainers, then our government needs to work towards that vision by implementing policies based in sound fiscal practices, and by focusing on addressing our most pressing needs first. If there is money left over, we can then pursue some of our wants. There can be a balance between fiscal conservatism and humanitarian compassion. It simply requires accepting that government cannot and should not, be the default source for solving every challenge in society. Not every issue is fixed by throwing giant fistfuls of money at it.
What I am seeing in Augusta, however, appears to be a focused effort to create a dependency state, and this causes me serious concern. I will continue to do my part to flip the script, however I also know it will take a team effort, including the voices of and active participation in the process, by the People I serve.
I believe in the free-market economy, and that over-regulation by the government tends to stifle both innovation and opportunity. I also do not and will not condone unethical or discriminatory wage practices. I recently introduced LD-112, An Act to Promote Opportunities by Establishing a Student Wage. I knew ahead of time this same general concept has been presented in each of the preceding 4 legislative sessions by other Representatives or Senators. I also knew the likely outcome, but still felt it worthwhile to keep the conversation alive. During the remainder of the 132nd Legislature, I will continue to work with other legislators on some very important and needed actions revolving around economic and budgetary reform. One very exciting item that is still under development is a proposal to pursue “zero base budgeting” instead of the default “tax and spend” model in Augusta, which has resulted in significant bloat, waste and painfully excessive burden on the taxpayers. I’ll do my best to keep you informed as that effort advances.
